It’s not exactly a well-kept secret that Sprint is interested in acquiring T-Mobile since SoftBank took over the carrier last year. However, in a recent television interview, Sprint chairman Masayoshi Son publicly stated that he would absolutely love to try and purchase the Uncarrier. He did clarify that at this point in time, Sprint hasn’t made an offer for T-Mobile. They’re still working closely with banks and antitrust authorities to try to get the finer details worked out before moving forward with any kind of deal.
However, when Masayoshi Son talked about making an offer for T-Mobile, he responded with “not yet” instead of the typical “no” you would expect from that type of question. While that doesn’t mean that Sprint absolutely will purchase T-Mobile, it’s pretty likely that they’re at least going to try. Of course, the FCC could still shoot it down at that point. We’ve seen that song and dance before.
I’m not sure whether or not a Sprint/T-Mobile merger would be the best thing for the wireless industry right now, but it would definitely shake things up a bit. Expect some more news to come out about this as 2014 rolls on.
