KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has a reputation for accurately predicting device manufacturer plans long before announcements are made. He has mainly made his mark with regard to Apple products, although he has covered Samsung on occasion. He is now turning his sights on Amazon and the rumored smartphone coming from the retail giant. In a note to clients, Kuo says,
“we predict Amazon (US) will launch its own brand smartphone in 3-6 months, using the same hardware strategy as used for its e-reader and tablet.”
Kuo goes on to predict Amazon will ship 300-600k units during the second quarter and 2-3 million units during 2014. The hardware specs that Kuo is projecting Amazon to pack into the phone include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, a 4.7-inch display running somewhere between 300 to 320 ppi, a 13MP camera, and a battery somewhere between 2,000 and 2,400 mAh. Kuo also thinks Amazon is going to throw in four cameras in addition to the normal front- and rear-facing cameras that come on smartphones. These four additional cameras will be used by the device for gesture control.
The ultimate mix of hardware will need to combine with Amazon’s business model and certain services like Amazon’s Instant Prime video to create an attractive unit for potential buyers if Amazon hopes to have any success in breaking into the market. Kuo mentions in his guidance to clients that should Amazon succeed in bringing a device to market, it could have positive ramifications for suppliers of the various hardware components.
