Yesterday, T-Mobile announced they were cutting off employee discounts for all consumers, including customers that were grandfathered into the discounts. To put it bluntly, that announcement sucked. Today, John Legere has partially changed the decision about employee discounts through the Un-carrier that will benefit some consumers, but not all.
If you had an employee discount on your plan prior to April 1st, you will be able to keep it as long as you stay with T-Mobile and stay with the employer. T-Mobile is wisely not forcing older customers off of the plans. However, any new customers after today aren’t going to be able to get any type of employee discount, but the $25 reward card for a device upgrade still applies.
Legere still sticks by his company’s decision, saying it removes a lot of confusion and lets everyone pay the same price, regardless of who they are or where they work. I respect what he’s trying to do, but at the same time, those corporate discounts likely aren’t going away from the other carriers, so this could end up hurting one of T-Mobile’s greatest selling points: the lower cost of service. Some bigger employee discounts really shave some cash off of plans through Verizon and AT&T, and if consumers know they won’t be able to get the same kind of discount on T-Mobile, it may put them off from switching entirely.
Either way, it’s good news that T-Mobile listened to the backlash and at least kind of changed their policies regarding these discounts.
