Nest, the company recently acquired by Google for their home automation hardware – thermostats and alarms – announced the discovery of a problem with their Nest Protect: Smoke + CO Alarm product. The alarm unit has a feature called Wave that lets users wave a hand in front of the unit to silence the alarm should it go off. Not a bad feature when the alternative may involve climbing up on a chair or something to push a reset button or even pull a battery. During internal testing, the Nest team discovered the units could incorrectly interpret certain actions in a specific set of circumstances as a wave and silence the alarm even though the user may not have intended to do so. Nest’s CEO, Tony Fadell, indicated they had received no reports of this occurring with units in the hands of customers, only in their own lab testing.
In response to this discovery, Nest is pushing out an update to units already deployed to turn off the Wave feature. They have also taken the step of halting sales of the Nest Protect alarms to ensure the malfunctioning units don’t end up in the hands of consumers before a fix can be issued. The Nest team is already working on a solution and will send an update out to existing units once they are satisfied it addresses the issue.
