comScore released their latest market share numbers for February 2014 for the U.S. smartphone market. Android continued to maintain a dominant position as the leading platform for smartphones with 52.1% of the market, a small increase of 0.2% compared to November 2013. Apple’s iOS also improved, by half of Android’s growth, moving from 41.2% to 41.3% of the market. The big winner in terms of percent growth was Microsoft’s platform which jumped from 3.1% to 3.4% of the market. Combined with a major slide by Blackberry, dropping 0.6% to only 2.9% of the market, Microsoft has taken over the third spot behind Android and iOS.
As far as manufacturers go, although Samsung still trails Apple, the gap continues to slowly narrow. For the February numbers, Samsung improved to 27.0% of the market, a full 1.0% jump, compared to Apple’s growth of only 0.1% to hold 41.3% of the market. LG posted a modest increase of 0.3% in market share while both Motorola and HTC saw their shares drop. The reduction in Motorola’s share is interesting given their growth in other global markets, especially those where the Moto G has proven popular with buyers.
comScore also compiled data on the apps smartphone users are using and what web sites and services their are accessing. With a large portfolio, Google Sites led the way in terms of “mobile media audience” with their sites and apps being used by 89.0% of smartphone users. Rounding out the top three were Yahoo Sites and Facebook. When looking at just a single app, Facebook was the clear leader reaching 75.7% of users. Google managed to capture the next two spots with their Google Play app and Google Search, both hovering around half of the market.
