Rounding out a trio of teardown’s by iFixit this week is an attempt to find out just what it inside the Samsung Gear Fit device. The team’s teardown revealed some tightly packed electronics inside the device along with some good news. Although it would take quite a bit of work, users could replace their own battery should the need arise. As iFixit discovered, the main body of the Gear Fit just pops out of the watch band, so we can expect to see aftermarket options start to appear to help people personalize their Gear fit.
iFixit did discover that the only way to get to the inside of the Gear Fit is by removing the display. Considering displays are often the most often broken piece of mobile technology, the fact that it can pop off relatively easy with some heat and prying is good. That does mean all other repairs require that step as well. iFixit also noted that several components like the home switch, the vibrator motor and the antenna are all soldered onto the main board, which will make replacement of any of those items a challenge.
iFixit’s final verdict on the Gear Fit is a rating of 6 out of 10 where 10 is the easiest to repair. For comparison, the Samsung Gear 2 garnered a score of 8 as pretty easy to repair. The Gear Fit is still a little bit easier to work on than the Samsung Galaxy S 5 which drew a score of 5 in iFixit’s teardown.
