I tried to set Permissions on a folder by Computer Objects, i.e. Allows
everyone to access that folder but denied some Computer from accessing
that folder no matter who logined that computer. But the permission by
computer entry never take effect when I test it. Anyone knows why?
Thanks a lot!

Re: Set Permissions on a folder by Computer Objects

Christine,
The computer object (computer$) means the computer account itself, e.g at
startup before anyone has logged on, and not "anyone using that computer".
Can I ask what you are trying to achieve? Do you want PersonA to be able to
use the folder from Computer1 but not from Computer2? Or do you mean
something different?

Re: Set Permissions on a folder by Computer Objects

Dear Anthony

Thanks a lot! My situation is we have a 3rd party application should
be accessed by some designated computers on the network only. That
application required the server to share a folder as an application
folder which contained exe files for users to run. The problem is many
users goto the shared application folder themselves from non-designated
computers by browse from "My Network Places", so I want to set
permission to allow designated computers to access to that folder
only...

Regards
Christine

Re: Set Permissions on a folder by Computer Objects

Christine,
in AD terms and for permissions, the Computer is an object and the User is
an object. You want a User to be able to run an exe on a network folder when
he is logged on to one computer but not when logged on to another. There's
no realistic way to do that. The folder permissions don't care where the
user logged on from. I can see what you are getting at but I think you need
to re-examine. Things you could do:
- Put the exe on the machine you want them to run it from, and not on the
network. Your application people might say it does not run like that, but I
would be willing to bet that it can.
- Run the app under terminal services, so you don't care where they run it
from
- Use Group Policy to block the exe from running on all computers except the
ones where you want it to run.
There are probably some more complicated things you could do as well, but
that depends on exactly what you are trying to achieve.
Hope that helps,
Anthony,
