With the merger between Sprint and T-Mobile in limbo due to Iliad’s massive offer, SoftBank has decided to move on. Re/code is reporting that SoftBank, the majority owner of Sprint, is hiring Marcelo Claure as the carrier’s next chief executive officer. This comes on the heels of word spreading that Dan Hesse would be on his way out and both moves are expected to be made official on Wednesday.

Some of you may be familiar with Marcelo Claure already. He is the founder and leader for Brightstar, a company that distributes mobile equipment, which SoftBank purchased just last year. Also, he is a member of Sprint’s board of directors. And Claure has owned Bolivar, the Bolivian soccer team, since 2008.

This definitely makes it difficult to imagine that the merger is still a possibility. It was expected that John Legere would takeover the merged entity and that the T-Mobile brand would live on. SoftBank, though, is showing it has replaced Dan Hesse and is ready to move on without such merger taking place. The merger was also gaining heat from regulators due to the size of both carriers. Claure’s experience in the wireless industry is certainly something SoftBank is taking advantage of to turn Sprint’s outlook around.
