Fans of Flappy Bird may have been excited to download its sequel, Swing Copters, and then were either greeted by a cheap knock-off or disappointed to find that they had to sift through dozens of clones that were released before the official app even saw the light of day. Thankfully, Google has taken matters into their own hands and have removed all of the clones from the Play Store.
Luckily for .Gears (the studio behind the popular app) removing the clones has marginally increased the number of downloads for the official app. Before they took action the official game had been buried at 63rd place in a search for “Swing Copters”, not a good start for such a highly anticipated game. This all happened after Dong Nguyen, the app’s developer, posted a short video of the game. Now that only the official app is available, it has been downloaded between 10,000 and 50,000 times.
Unfortunately this is not an uncommon occurrence in the Play Store, due to its open nature. By comparison, Swing Copters was released in the iOS app store on the same day and quickly reached the top 50, while it hasn’t even cracked the top 300 in the Play Store.
