The Moto G was the best selling smartphone of all time for Motorola, so how to do you improve on something so great? In talking with customers, they wanted a bigger display, better camera, better sound, removable storage, and features like Moto Assist. It looks like Motorola delivered on all five.
The new Moto G sports a 5-inch 720p (1280 x 720) display, as opposed to 4.5-inches last year. The camera on the original Moto G was pretty average if that, but the new Moto G features an 8 MP rear facer and a 2 MP front facer. As to sound, they have incorporated stereo speakers at the front of the device, which is something that you won’t find on most other budget phones. With only 8 GB of internal storage, a microSD slot was seriously lacking on the original, but they are including it on the standard model this year.
Since the Moto G isn’t a powerhouse like the Moto X, it can’t handle features like Moto Display and Moto Voice, but it can with Moto Assist. Moto Assist is now included, which allows you to setup specific actions based on if your driving, in a meeting, or at home. Motorola Migrate is another feature that helps users transfer their data to their new phone, but since many Moto G owners are upgrading from a feature phone, Motorola Migrate now transfers data from feature phones too.
Just like last year’s mode, you still get the same customization with Motorola Shells and Motorola Flip Shells. I actually prefer this over the customization found on the Moto X in that you can easily swap for a different color.
The Moto G is available at Motorola.com starting today for the same low price as last year. That’s right…..$179 for the 8 GB version. Yes, that’s unlocked and contract free!!
