Motorola unleashed Touchless Control on last year’s Moto X, but it’s now been rebranded to Moto Voice for the all new Moto X. If you’re not familiar with Touchless Control, (or Moto Voice), it allows you to ask your Moto X to do certain things without ever handling the device. You can find out who won the big game, set a reminder, set a timer, send a text message, and so much more.
Moto Voice is essentially the same application as Touchless Control, but there are a couple of new commands, such as “Good Morning” and “Goodnight.” You also won’t be locked into just using “OK Google Now” to wake your device, and it now works with other third party apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube.
Touchless Control was found in the settings screen on the 1st gen Moto X, but Motorola simplified things with the 2014 edition by including Moto Voice into a new app simply called Moto. Moto Actions, Moto Assist, and Moto Display also reside in the Moto app making things a lot less confusing.
Once you open the Moto app, you will get a quick walk through of some of the features.
Once you accept the usual privacy policy you will be able to choose you own unique launch phrase. You can use “OK Scotty,” “OK Moto X,” “Listen Up Master,” or whatever else you want. Just make sure you’re in a quiet place, and you will have no problem setting it up. You will be asked to speak the command three times to ensure that your Moto X understands you every time you use the command. Once you complete the recordings, you’re all set. Just say your launch phrase to wake your phone up and then a command (many listed below). If you ever want to change your launch phrase, just return to the Moto app, tap the gear icon at the top right, then tap on Moto Voice, and select “Change or Improve Launch Phrase.”
It’s couldn’t be simpler right? Here’s a video showing you how it’s all done and below that is a list of commands you can use. Also be sure to check out all our Moto X (2014) guides.
