Since the @DroidLanding Twitter account was spotted as active again earlier this month, the hunt has been on for more information about what Verizon has planned for their Droid line of devices. New reports indicate Verizon will release a single Droid device this year, built by Motorola, that will come with a fast charging battery as its distinguishing feature. Motorola, which has an exclusive contract to produce the Droid devices for Verizon, appears to have this single model planned for this year, a change from the last two cycles when three devices were released each time.
Verizon’s Droid line is unique for the carrier in that most manufacturers now make their devices available across multiple carriers. Nevertheless, Verizon apparently sees value in the franchise as some customers still seek the Droid brand.
Although Motorola has not said anything about the device, some sources think the new smartphone will be named the Droid Turbo. However, a Verizon spokesperson has indicated no decisions have been reached regarding the name of the device. No other details have surfaced regarding the smartphone, but the codename Quark is known to be connected to the device.
A firm date has not been set for the announcement of a new Droid lineup for 2014, but sources think sometime in October is likely.
