On Thursday August 7, 2014, Sprint announced its plans to close WiMax, the United States’ first ever ‘4G’ network, before the end of 2015. Today, thanks to an anonymous Android Central reader, we now know the exact date for the closure is Friday, November 6, 2015.

According to a leaked newsletter, from the wireless provider to the tipster, Sprint is preparing to start distributing informative letters to all its CL customers explaining the reasoning behind the closure, from this Monday, October 6.

The operator has dedicated a small section of the letter to notify customers that their current smartphones, which work on both WiMax and Sprint’s 3G network, will continue to connect to its own 3G network following WiMax’s demise.

If your smartphone is slightly outdated and you want to upgrade to a newer handset capable of accessing 4G services, this maybe the perfect opportunity as the carrier will be launching some special programs later this year aimed at finding you an alternative low cost, or even free, smartphone that will work on its Spark LTE network.

Sprint’s set to send out final notification letters to all its IL and prepaid customers 180 days before the WiMax shut down and will provide help on how to migrate to a different network.
