Updates for AdAware and Spybot

After doing the update for AdAware, there was an icon in the systray. I
tried to find a way to stop it from loading in the AdAware program and
nothing. I unticked it in MSCONFIG and it put itself back so I
uninstalled AdAware 2007 and will install the old version.

Same here. The icon in the systray seems useless and I cannot get rid of
it. AW settings offer no option to remove it.

Is the old version still available somewhere?

PITA, I agree. Uninstalling it removed the AdWareWatch crap from the
task manager too.

Thanks, Alias. I found a copy on CNET and now have it installed. Neat
and simple, the way it should be. I wonder how long LavaSoft will
continue to provide new definition files.

I'm thinking about not installing it at all. It never finds anything.

The Lavasoft Forum confirms what you both are experiencing. The biggest
problem is that the Lavasoft folks don't seem to be recognizing this as a
problem, yet. I have been disgruntled by the fact that the Adaware 2007
updates want you to dl'd the files for Adwatch even if you don't have the
'Pro' version, that sucks. I think that I will be seeking alternatives to
this app....in spite of its' years of good service, it seems to be turning
to 'poopy' almost overnight.

Adaware has never found anything on my computer and, now that ZAPro has a
scanner, I really have no further use for it.

I concur with you Alias. I have had Ad Aware for 2 years and all it finds
is *cookies* classified as *critical*. Thus thinking about removing it
myself.

alternatives to Adaware:

It seems that a couple of the 'recommended' apps, on the first link I sent,
have negative comments at Spywarewarrior.com.
I would put my trust in them before dl'ding anything.

I use Crap Cleaner to get rid of cookies and use its settings to not
nuke cookies I want to keep.

Hi Loon.....

I did try out Spyware Doctor and I suppose it is good, but I didn't like
all the "thrashing about" in the background, so have disabled it.

I am just using the *old three*.....Spyware S & D, AdAware 1.6 and
SpywareBlaster. Don't think I need anything else cuz all they find is
the same darn cookie every time and I can manually delete that one.

Hey Figgs,
Yeah, I have about the same thing, except that I have the MS app,
the ZAPro, the HOSTS file, and others. Having the Adaware is probably
overkill, ya think? Like you, it has never found anything....other than the
odd, benign little cookie once in a while and I have Cookie Pal to remedy
that.
I just feel like Lavasoft is shooting themselves in the foot with
this new 'crap.'

I do the same with CCleaner.
I do have an icon in the task bar for Spybot S&D Resident, since the latest
update. Does not allow me to remove it. Any ideas?

Alias has it on the money. Look up 'Resident Tea Timer' in the Help and it
will explain everything, including how to turn it off (that will get it out
of the Systray).

I never really bothered with SpyBot, just have SpywareBlaster and Ad-Aware
2007 plus my Zone Alarm Pro and NOD32

I don't have that icon in my notification area but like the rest of you
only ever get tracking cookies found and then there's never more than 3 or
4 I only run it once a week on a Monday morning.

I haven't upgraded John's machine with the new version yet, at least it's
still getting updates <g>

Can we say "paranoia"???? Mua ha ha. Couldn't resist that, old sock!!

I don't have Zone Alarm (XP firewall works just fine), no HOSTS file
(never did like the idea of that one) and my EZ Trust AV just expired
yesterday, so running without one day's updates. No big deal, frankly.

Think about it......when was the last time your AV went off?? Years for
me. But will get either AVG or Avast......just have to decide which
one.

(do that about once a month) and it found 4 or 5 ad cookies in Firefox,
so obviously AdAware does not check that browser......one more reason to
dump it. OTOH, I prefer the speed of AdAware........and as I typed that
last statement, realized that Spybot has to be better cuz it takes 5
times as long (not to forget it found my FF cookie stash and checked
it). I usually manually delete those anyway.

me out with a *paranoia* Firefox matter and that is when I realized that
our beloved little proggie, SpywareBlaster, puts a ton of bad cookie
thingies into Firefox. Not too shabby!!

roots like you guys.....drilling teeth out of my jawbone is not a fun
thing to go through. My jaw is still REALLY SORE, but I have lost
almost a stone!! That's OK!!!!!! Have to go back to the surgeon on
Friday cuz it is still very, very sore. Ron and I head to Toronto
tomorrow for his 6 month checkup. Fingers crossed, everyone!!

before Windows loads.

I've used AdAware for years now and it's never found anything
significant on *my* computer. If you're cleaning a very infested
computer, it can be useful.

Wrong on that count, Harry. I just plain haven't decided which one I
want to use. I assume there are small differences in them. I have used
EZ Trust for at least 6 or 7 years, including when it was free and
called InoculateIT PE. So just not sure what one I will use.

Thanks Alias. I forgot to say I do have an older disabled version of
Zone Alarm on here......just don't use it. Other than the "call home
feature", XP, ZA Pro and a router all passed GRC's test with flying
colours. Stealthed with every one of them.

I suppose I could go up one level with ZA and use it. I never, ever use
the latest from them. Learned that the hard way. (G)
