Corning has just unveiled a tougher, thinner, clearer version of its incredibly popular Gorilla Glass panel. According to the American company, Gorilla Glass 4 is more durable on impact than its predecessor and can now survive a massive 80% of all tumbles and falls from up to 1m (3.3ft) onto a rough surface.
Charts in the press release outline comparisons between Corning’s latest offering and the Gorilla Glass 3 coating. They reveal that the 0.4mm thick Glass 4, although 0.3mm thinner, is somewhat tougher than the 0.7mm thick panel which features in the previous generation. Now, OEMs can improve the durability of their smartphones and tablets without having to use thicker and heavier glass.
Test samples have already been distributed to manufacturers, so you should expect to see the glass coming to a device near you sometime in the not-too-distant future.
