If you own a Nexus Player or the ADT-1 developer unit, you already know that the Play Store is available to you for downloading apps. Since it’s still early in the game, there are a little over a handful of apps, other than games. We reported last week, that developers have to submit their Android TV apps to Google for approval, but even after approval, only certain apps will actually appear in the Android TV version of the Play Store.
We don’t know for certain what is going on, but we can only assume that Google has partnered with certain developers for some sort of exclusivity feature period. However, Google is still approving apps, just not featuring them in the Android TV apps section. The good news is that they can still be downloaded and installed via the desktop Play Store.
The hard part is finding the apps, but I did uncover some Android TV compatible apps that you can install now. All you have to do is click the links below from your desktop. Select Install at the top of the page, then select your Android TV device (Nexus Player or ADT-1). Finally, click on Install again.
Assuming your device is turned on and connected to the internet, the app will be installed directly to your device within a minute or two.
I want to be clear that these apps are officially compatible and approved for Android TV. I know there are some apps that give you the option to download to one or both of the official Android TV devices, but they are technically not Android TV apps. Approved and compatible apps will actually show up on your main apps page, whereas anything else that isn’t official only appears under Settings > Apps or the Sideload Launcher (listed below).
These are the apps that I found at the time of this post, and I am sure I missed a few. Like I said, it isn’t easy finding them. If I missed anything, please let us know and I will be sure to update this post. For now, this list doesn’t include any games, but if you have noticed any please let us know those as well.
