Microsoft’s cloud storage competitor to Google Drive has had a small update today. The OneDrive app adds push notifications for shared files and folders, thumbnails for business files, custom PIN timeouts and the bug fixes we normally see with any kind of app update.
In keeping with the new tactic of acknowledging that the majority of mobile devices are powered by Android and iOS and not its Windows 8.1 OS, Microsoft is staying on top of bringing a solid app experience to all ecosystems. This fresh direction ushered in by its new CEO, Satya Nadella, is an approach of necessity seeing as how Microsoft’s main strength lies in its products and relationships with the business sector.
The most notable example of this is with Microsoft opening up its Office Suite to the iOS and Android platforms. Nadella is keenly aware that if he alienates the business sector, then Microsoft will lose its grip on its biggest revenue source, opening the door for other operating systems like Ubuntu to encroach on its territory as it has in quite a few European markets.
OneDrive, formerly known as SkyDrive, models itself fairly closely to Google Drive. There used to be a file size restriction of 2 gigabytes compared to Google Drive’s 10 gigabytes, but Microsoft quickly upped it to 10 gigabytes. Though, if one wants to upgrade their storage capacity, Microsoft offers only a measly 200 gigabytes for an extra $4 a month, whereas Google Drive offers 1 terabyte for an extra $10 a month; however, to Microsoft’s credit and (again) a nod to its business clients, if you are a subscriber to Office 365 then storage space is unlimited for OneDrive. Both services offer the same introductory capacity: 15 gigabytes.
