Cannot install IP based Printer

When I attempt to setup an HP network printer and use a standard TCPIP Port,
nothing works:
* Print Test Page results in a popup that it failed
* Using Notepad, I get a "The handle is invalid"
* Using Wordpad, the Print command executes without error, but nothing
prints and nothing is in the queue and nothing is in the event viewer
* There are no errors in the event viewer
* When I setup the port, it immediately recognises it as an HP JetDirect card
* I can setup the desired printer on my test machine, that has the same
OS-type installed (so I know my process works, it's just failing on this one
machine.)
* I am using Windows 2003 Enterprise R2, SP2
* This production server is identical in every way except:
1. It has DFS installed
2. It has Print Management option installed
3. It has had MS Dynamics GP installed on it
* Except for the FRx print driver installed by Great Plains, there were no
previous printers installed on this machine. It is a relatively new build.

Any ideas? Dying here to retire my old Win2k print server...

RE: Cannot install IP based Printer

Isn't that instruction in the printer's manual?
What's its model?

RE: Cannot install IP based Printer

Since I mentioned that I can successfully setup the printer on the sister
non-Prod box of the same OS, I know how to set it up. ANY printer I setup
fails to print.

No errors in any log.

RE: Cannot install IP based Printer

Have you:

- Re-configured it?
- Configured it in another server?
- Tested from another machine?
- Updated the printer driver in the server and client?

Sorry for these questions, but we need to make sure we are not missing any
of these things.

* Yes
* Yes
* Yes
* Yes

ANY printer that is installed get's the same message. For example, the
built-in XPS document printer (where the printout will be sent to a physical
file, not a printer) gets the same error.

It's the strangest thing. But the SAME actions work on all my other server
(just not the one I really want to be the Print Server.)

Like I said, when I setup the Standard TCPIP Port, it immediately sees the
JetDirect card (it identifies it by name.) But when I try to print on this,
or any other printer (USB, XPS, etc.) I get the same message.

Wow! Never heard of anything like that. It makes me wonder if there's a virus
around or missing patch, since it happens w/ any printer in any server.

RE: Cannot install IP based Printer

I just found on clue. All my servers that work have the unidrv.dll version
0.3.6000, dated 3/2007.

The one server that is not working has the UNIDRV.dll of 0.3.3790, dated
2/2007 (which is the version that comes with Win2k3 Service Pack 2.)

Now, is this my problem? And if so, how the heck to I upgrade the
unidrv.dll???

I misundertood your problem. I thought all servers had the same issue.
I'm not sure if that file is the problematic one, but since you are losing
time, I'd move to another server and retire this Win2k one.

RE: Cannot install IP based Printer

I tink I got it working, by using a driver that doesn't use the UNIDRV.dll.

The unidrv.dll must be the problem. I created the printer again, but
clicked Windows Update, rather than the driver I downloaded from HP.

That driver does NOT use the UNIDRV.dll.

Let's hope I never have to install a printer that uses the unidrv.dll....
