Ekin Labs has just announced an innovative home security system called Hi WiFi, which can connect to existing WiFi networks in your home and keep a look out for intruders using motion sensors on your smartphone/tablet. Unlike other security solutions which require an elaborate setup process, Hi WiFi only requires you to download a free app and let it do the rest.
Hi WiFi has also received the CES Innovation Award this year, which is testament to the convenience offered by this solution.
“With Hi WiFi, we wanted to deliver a security solution that anyone could use immediately,” said Francescantonio Della Rosa, Ekin Labs’ co-founder and CEO. “In developing Hi WiFi, we’ve cracked the code on using WiFi networks to detect motion. When combined with machine learning, this enables us to determine who and what is moving within a home. We can even detect motion from outside the home.”
The Hi WiFi Beta will be available for download starting late 2015, so you can’t exactly get your hands on it yet. We’ll keep our ear to the ground for more details on the app. You can get more details on the app’s progress from Ekin Labs’ dedicated page.

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) January 06, 2015
Ekin Labs, Ltd., a leading innovator in smart home wireless solutions, today announced its flagship solution, Hi WiFi, at the International CES 2015 conference and tradeshow (booth #75515), where it has already been recognized as a CES Innovation Award honoree for this year. Hi WiFi is the industry’s first smart home security solution that leverages consumers’ existing WiFi network and WiFi-enabled devices to deliver a cost-effective, “smart” home security solution. Unlike complicated and expensive sensor-based solutions, Hi WiFi requires nothing more than a free app download in order for you to immediately install a home security system that uses the WiFi network to detect intruders.
Hi WiFi’s premise is simple. Once a consumer downloads the application, they are able to use the interface to transform their existing WiFi network into security solution that can detect motion and even discern between an intruder and a family member or pet. The system leverages any WiFi-enabled device as a sensor, so the “security zone” is created between the existing WiFi router and the Hi WiFi-enabled device. No other hardware or software is required. Hi WiFi separates itself from other home security systems in three distinct ways:
- Hi WiFi is incredibly easy to use – If you have a WiFi network, you can have a sophisticated security system. All a consumer needs to do is download an app. Hi WiFi uses the WiFi network and WiFi-enabled devices you already have in place.
- Hi WiFi delivers a “smart” system that can learn over time and is capable of great sophistication – Despite the ease with which this system is installed and managed, its sophistication is far beyond “dumb” motion sensors. Hi WiFi learns over time to recognize false positives and can even filter out the movement of family pets versus an intruder. This intelligence extends to smart notifications that alert contacts in parallel rather than in sequence.
- Hi WiFi’s pricing model makes it affordable by just about everyone – Hi WiFi’s new offering is the first to turn existing devices into motion sensors, thus doing away with expensive and complicated specialty sensors. As an application run on a smartphone or tablet, the cost to the consumer is a very low monthly price.
Within the U.S. alone, there are more than 70 million people that can take advantage of the WiFi they already have to secure their homes. And many are actively seeking such solutions. The global home security solutions market is expected to grow from $20B to $34B at a CAGR of 9 percent from 2012-2017, where the U.S. alone accounts for more than 50 percent of the global market. DIY home security solutions could reach $1.5B by 2020.
“Hi WiFi represents much more than just an application and smart home security solution; it’s the beginning of an entirely new ecosystem,” said Mauro Pelosi, Ekin Labs’ CTE and co-founder. “The solution itself is easily integrated into any WiFi-enabled device, making it not just a standalone solution, but potentially a complementary one as well. There is also the potential to deliver this functionality as a cloud service and for markets beyond home security, including demanding physical security environments and home analytics as well.”
Hi WiFi has been developed by Ekin Labs, Ltd., a Finnish startup incorporated in April 2013 with a unique blend of expertise and intellectual property. Co-founders Francescantonio Della Rosa and Mauro Pelosi have deep experience within the mobile realm. Their collective experience includes multiple books from both founders, dozens of scientific publications, and over a dozen patents related to wireless technologies. Together, they represent a powerful combination of technical expertise, product development experience, and entrepreneurship.
