Carl Pei, the founder of OnePlus, sat down for an interview with PC World discussing the turbulent year the company had since launching their “flagship killer” device. He talks about the unprecedented demand for the device, especially in the US, and struggling to keep the supply of the OnePlus One up to meet that demand.

Pei likes to compare his company to other tech startups that build a huge install base before trying to monetize, and that’s a fairly accurate comparison, considering OnePlus sells the One fairly close to cost. Since the company employs about 600 people, there’s obviously not much margin leftover for profit.

Because of those razor thin margins, though, OnePlus has to be careful not to create too much stock that it won’t be able to sell, which created the invite system. That system is arguably the most painful part of purchasing a OnePlus One, but despite how much of a headache it’s been, Pei says they’re sticking with it for the foreseeable future, like it or not. He seems to know that the customer experience side of things hasn’t been great, though, so hopefully the company can address that going forward.

He didn’t disclose much about the OnePlus Two that we’re all anticipating, but he did say that the device should launch within the next six months, so we won’t have to wait too much longer. Pei also mentioned that OnePlus was working on a separate phone as well, so we might end up seeing two new devices from them this year.
