Earlier today it was revealed that Samsung has commenced mass production of their new Exynos 8890 chipset. Now we also have Qualcomm officially announcing their highly anticipated Snapdragon 820 chipset. The Snapdragon 820 is expected to bring several improvements in chip performance to the smartphone market when it starts reaching consumers in devices next year and for Qualcomm, will hopefully put the whole Snapdragon 810 overheating issue behind them.
One of the key improvements Qualcomm is bringing to market with the Snapdragon 820 is their new Kryo architecture. Qualcomm says the new instruction set will resulted in a doubling of performance and efficiency compared to the Snapdragon 810. Qualcomm also developed their next generation Hexagon 680 DSP to go on the SoC to improve performance even more. Other chips have also been upgraded, like a new Adreno 530 gpu that offers a 40% performance improvement and the new X12 LTE offer a tripling of upload speeds and a 33% improvement in download speeds. Even the Spectra camera ISP is an upgrade and means the chip can process images of up to 28 megapixels.
Qualcomm is also moving on in their journey to providing short recharge times for users by including support for their new Quick Charge 3.0 technology. According to Qualcomm, Quick Charge 3.0 is 38% more efficient than Quick Charge 2.0.
