Google Fiber has been slowly expanding and is now coming to parts of San Francisco. However, not just all over, specifically to apartments, condos, and affordable housing units.
Exactly which parts of San Francisco is unknown right now, and Google also says we won’t find out for a while. However, when it does arrive it won’t be building its own network like it has done in other cities, but instead relying on existing fiber networks. This should make moving in a lot quicker.
Michael Slinger, Google Fiber’s business operations director, says:
To date, we’ve focused mostly on building fiber-optic networks from scratch. Now, as Google Fiber grows, we’re looking for more ways to serve cities of different shapes and sizes
Just like Google Fiber has done in other cities, they plan on offering free gigabit internet service to affordable housing properties and a few public ones. They are also teaming up with a nonprofit organization to teach people the basics of the internet like browsing websites, setting up email accounts, and searching for jobs.
