A little odd that the Chromecast app is used with all Google Cast-ready devices, right? That’s why Google is renaming the app this week.
Coinciding with the launch of Vizio’s SmartCast P-Series televisions and SmartCast audio equipment, Google announced that the Chromecast app will move forward as “Google Cast.”
Adam Champy, a product manager at Google, explains the renaming:
We’re also changing the name of the Chromecast app to Google Cast app, to better reflect that Google Cast technology is now supported across a wide range of devices such as Chromecast, TVs, displays and speakers. The Google Cast app makes it easy for you to discover great stuff to watch, find more apps, customize backdrop, and more.”
The renamed app will debut this week on Android and iOS. If you’re wanting to see changes reflected immediately, Google set up a new Google Cast site covering all things related to the technology. In addition to explaining the technology, Google is using the site to push people to buy televisions and speakers with Google Cast.
