Google building its own version of the Amazon Echo

According to sources speaking to The Information, Google is building its own voice-assisted product similar to the Amazon Echo.


The technology publication has reported that Google looks to be working alone on the rumored release, and at the time of writing details are scarce.

This latest news on Google’s plans to take over the living room comes as part of a report on Next, described as a “stalled”, struggling service that hasn’t delivered in the way that many had hoped. Nest’s team have apparently requested to be involved in Google’s plans, The Information claims, although Google is said to have rejected the offer.

Whispers that Google’s Echo competitor will integrate Google Now into the experience are gathering speed, and admittedly the theory makes some sense.

Past experience proves that Google has plenty of know-how when it comes to voice recognition technology, considering the power of Google’s voice search on Android devices. Just what the company’s mystery gadget is capable of remains to be seen, however.



The Amazon Echo has been well received by customers, with plenty of buyers complimenting the product on an easy setup process, accurate voice reading and a speedy user experience.

Just last month, Amazon lifted the lid on the Echo Dot, which is essentially a smaller version of the Amazon Echo. The release is equipped with similar technology to the bigger Echo, although this smaller build has an audio out port that allows for connecting to external speakers.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on the Google camp to see if there’s any word on the group’s voice recognition system.
