It’s likely that you’ve never heard of CHUWI, but the company’s new Hi12 Stylus is worth knowing about. This hybrid is a laptop and a tablet, runs two operating systems, and supports a stylus.

In January 2014, Intel was working with a number of hardware manufacturers to release devices running both Android and Windows. The idea, at least on paper, came across as brilliant because consumers would get productivity from Windows and apps from Android. When it came time to execute, Intel and its partners failed. There was just little interest upon launch for these Dual OS devices, so the hardware manufacturers backed out and continued release separate laptops and tablets with single operating systems.

CHUWI doesn’t need Intel’s backing to create a device with hybrid hardware and software. The Hi12 Stylus’ screen can be removed from the keyboard and Windows can be converted to Android. It’s just very disappointing to see the keyboard dock and stylus are not included with the device. So you really only get a tablet to start and have to pay more to reach hybrid status.

Key specifications:

  • 12-inch (2160×1440) display
  • Intel Cherry Trail Atom Z8300 processor
  • 4GB of RAM
  • 64GB of internal storage
  • 5MP / 2MP cameras
  • 11000mAh battery
  • Windows 10 / Android 5.1 Lollipop

The actual stylus that is part of the device’s name is actually pretty fancy, offering 256 levels of pressure and two buttons for left and right clicks.

While it is a dated version of Android, having Windows 10 is a nice treat for anyone who buys the Hi12 Stylus. It’ll meet the strength of Windows with the massive catalog of content offered on Google Play.

The CHUWI Hi12 Stylus is available online for $299, but finding exactly where to buy it is quite a task. Online retailer Gearbest is selling the hybrid in its tablet-only state for $255 while a bundle with the keyboard dock is priced at $299. The stylus will be on sale starting next month.
