According to analyst Kevin Wang from IHS Technology, Xiaomi shipped 14.8 million smartphones in the first quarter of 2016. If true, this would put Xiaomi right on pace with last year.
In the first quarter of 2015, Xiaomi managed to ship 14.98 million smartphones. Later we discovered that all of 2015 combined to 70 million units shipped. Today, we received a number depicting that a stable amount of shipments went out this past quarter (14.8 million). The number includes total shipments worldwide, not just those in China. Although this isn’t the improvement Xiaomi had hoped for, it’s far better than the portion of the industry that’s struggling right now like HTC, Sony, and LG. The company came just short of its goal last year by roughly 10 million units and is seeking redemption this year.
Strong sales in the first quarter most likely came from the Mi 5 and other mid-range devices. Xiaomi is on pace, but if they want to beat out last year, they might have to do something extra before the year concludes. The upcoming Xiaomi Max may just provide the company with the shipment boost it needs in the second quarter. Only time will tell.
