Roaming Profiles and PST files

I have my users set up with Folder Redirects for My Docs and Desktop as well
as Roaming Profiles.

I have noticed that the users archive PST files (Outlook 2003) do not follow
them.
They remain stored locally to the users profile and not on the network.
Is there a way to correct this or should I manually move these PSTs to a
network share?

I know you cannot sync a PST file but I though it should follow the profile
roam settings.

PST's are used more often these days for archieving purposes. You need to
setup your users with "cache" exchange profiles so they keep both an offline
mailbox as well as a copy on the server.

I do have my users setup in Cache mode; but that it not a PST.
Cache mode is unrealated.
A number of users use the Auto Archive feature in Outlook thus creating a
PST under document and settings\username\.....

But if that user logs into a diff PC they do not have the PST.
I have Roaming profiles setup to allow for users to move about the office
without having to move their physical box.

It seems to be a limitation in roaming profiles in windows to include the
pst files inside the users profile? correct??

Your roaming profile is more for desktop and network configurations from pc
to pc. You are correct in presuming that it does not have any affect on PST.
You can direct your pst file to a network location and store it there and it
wouldn't matter what pc a user logs onto they would just need to setup a
personal folder pointing to the network pst.

Use UNC path or mapped drive for PST location, Outlook and Windows are
not talking to each other about the location of the profile

Get exchange.... and even better use OWA... Outlook web access... on ssl,
they can even access thier mail from anywhere if you add a VLAN or DMZ
server... but that's just going fancy... OWA comes with exchange, (plus other
protocols) but exchange will solve your mailbox issues 100%

I astually have exchange,
Thats not the issue
The issue is the Auto Archive options.
I tried my best to not have PSTs but everyone holds their mail forever and
eventually the server tell them their mailbox is full.
So they archive.
And the Atchive is a PST by default in their profile, and a roaming profile
does not let the PST roam.

I tried folder redirect for the appication data but I seem to recall that
does not help either, it wants to make it an offline folder, and pst cannot.

So I guess I have to live with it.

I've had the same problem with thousands of users. Profile roams but it
doesn't sync/copy their PST files - bad move on MS's part.

If there was just some GPO setting for it, it would make life a lot
better.

I try and tell users to put the archive on the Z mapped home drive, but
they never do.

I ran a utility the other day, some 300 machines, to delete cached
profiles off workstations because of problems with a migration to a new
server and didn't think about their archived files - since they have
been told hundreds of times to not save ANYTHING on their C drive - I'm
still hearing the complaints, and each time I remind them that they were
warned that any files kept on the C drive could be lost at any time and
that we don't backup the C drive on any workstation.

Hello!

1)If you use roaming profile is easy as said before to move the archive on the home folder of the user (this is imperious neccesary to be on the server for backup)

2)anyway, at point 1 you will have problems with users that have laptops and connect from home so in this case if you really want the roam archive.pst file to be roamed automatically and to be available offline too, you should move it from the default location of the archive C:\Documents and Settings\userxxx\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\archive.pst (because this location is not included in the roaming profile by default) to a location that is roamed (by example)
C:\Documents and Settings\userxxx\ Settings\Application Data\archive.pst and change from outlook to point at this data file and not to the old location (because you moved it :D )

So, after you will log off the user, the profile + archive.pst will roam on your server.

To enforce this is better to keep the cahed roaming profile to prevent unnecesarry traffic (you should erase the cahed roaming profile only if you are using terminal server role, but I do not think this is the case.

An option that could help us all a lot could be the offline syncronization or folder redirection, but none of them give us the posibility to roam pst... :((

PST files are unsupported on anything other than the local hard drive - and
accessing them across a LAN or WAN connection will cause performance
problems (and likely data corruption). PST files don't really have any place
in a corporate network, if you ask me. See

If the data is important, keep it in the mailbox. I disable archiving in
Outlook for all users.

Roaming profiles and large data files is a recipe for disaster, though.
