Hello,

I have a group of computers (PIV) with Win98 and WinXP, it had 500 MB RAM. I
have increase memory up to 1 GB. WinXP boots a lot faster, but when loading
W98 it reboots and only can boot in save mode.

I have been making proves and it boots well with 750 MB.
This system has little free space on disk.

I have other group of computers (also PIV but newer) that have also Win98
and WinXP, also with 1 GB of RAM and Win98 has no problem booting.

If someone has any idea about this problem...

Thanx in advance.

It's a known issue with W98 that more than 512MB *can* cause problems

The MS article is the right one.
Just add the MaxFileCache=524288 line under the [vcache] header in
System.ini. (you can also use 512000, which is easier to remember)
You don't need the , or kb . You just need the number (524288
is the maximum you should enter)

Do NOT use the second suggestion in that article or you will limit your
Win98 machines to be able to use only 512MB of you total 1GB of ram.
That is the suggestion to use the MsConfig utility to physically limit the
amt of ram the system can use.

On your problem computer, you may have to remove the extra ram until you
make this change and then shut down , install the extra ram and reboot.
I use 1GB on my Win98SE system and it works fine with that line added.

You should also add that line to the other Win98 PCs (using more than 512MB
of ram) so that they don't run out of 'address space' which could cause
the PC to lock up.
