I am purchasing a HP NAS device with 12 500GB hard drives. I want to
configure this device as one large partition. Is there a best practices I
should follow? What is the largest partition I can create? Should I mess with
block size? I will be using HP's hardware array to configure the drives, is
there a recommended RAID level for windows for a partion using this many
drive? This is a storage only device for data that remains pretty stagnent.

Thanks, Mike

Hello,

Creating a really large partition may lead to issue, like:
-Really huge chkdsk time
-Hardly able to defrag the partition
-Security corruption if around 4 Millions of file

You may keep one raid volume to minimize space lost but would definitely
make many partition

just my 2 cents

Re: Large Partition for Windows 2003 Server

I agree with Mathieu here.

Question : what is your (technical) reason to create such a large volume ?

Re: Large Partition for Windows 2003 Server

We are migrating data from another source and the application can only use a
single drive letter...it is better if we can map the root folder to one
letter. It is an older application, i can split the data to two drive letters
so have two 3 TB partitions but may have the same issue

Re: Large Partition for Windows 2003 Server

you can make a DFS tree that point to share on different partition.
Map the letter to the root of the dfs, so it will be invisible from the
application.

Re: Large Partition for Windows 2003 Server

Cool, Do you have any links to DFS. I will go search now too.

Thanks, Mike
