I recently formatted my notebook's hard drive and reinstalled XP Pro. After
downloading all updates, I ran defrag. It runs through the analysis. After
it compacts some files, it tries to move a file and reboots the notebook.
I've looked at all of the self-help and emailed Microsoft. They gave me
links to the self-help I'd already checked and to this discussion group. Any
ideas?

Do you defrag in Save Mode?

I would use Save Mode with Command Prompt and enter dfrg.msc at the
prompt and start defragging.
