I'm trying to install SP4 on a PC that has no Internet connection, and has
Windows 2000 already installed (with no servicepacks).
I've downloaded the network installation file on another PC and copied it to
the 2000 PC and double clicked the w2ksp4.exe file. Then a very brief DOS
window opens and quickly closes again, but nothing else.
Could someone tell me what I'm doing wrong, please?

Re: Windows 2000 SP4 installation problem

Hello kevjp,

Did you download it from MS website? Do you have enough space on the harddisk?
Maybe it is corrupt, try to copy it again. Did you work with an administrator
account?

Re: Windows 2000 SP4 installation problem

Hi, thanks for the quick reply.
The answers are all 'Yes'.
I hadn't considered that the downloaded file may have been corrupt, so I'll
d/l it again now.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks.

Make sure that you are really downloading the network installation file
and not the express installation file. The network installation file is
129MB in size. The express one is a few hundred kilobytes from memory.

If you want to diagnose the problem, first start a cmd prompt, find the
downloaded exe and run it from the command line. You should see any
error messages.

Cheers,

Cliff

Re: Windows 2000 SP4 installation problem

Meinolf Weber, Enkidu,
Thanks very much for your input.
I'm almost to ashamed to admit the reason for the problem! I hadn't realised
how little RAM that machine had. I'm used to huge amounts so didn't check...
The flashing window that zooms on and off contained a few words which I
hadn't noticed before. I tried a screen capture again and again until I timed
it just right (why on Earth does it disappear without time to read?) and saw
that there wasn't enough memory to open the file. The hard disc memory was ok
but not the RAM. So I ran it from a CD and it was OK. Yeah, I should have
thought of that before, sorry!
I'm off to buy more RAM now...
Cheers, much appreciated.

Hello kevjp,

Good to hear that it is solved. No reason for shame, sometimes it's so esay
that you can not see it and think complicated.
