I can remember installing a Windows-2000 (I think) defrag file on my
Windows-98SE system some time ago...I did this to make the defraging my
system faster. Well, I have lost track of the name of that file and
where it should be installed on the 98SE system. Can anybody enlighten
me on this subject?

This is a part of my system recovery after my recent system meltdown.

Thanks in advance for any help sent my way.

You may be thinking of the Defrag.exe file from Windows Me, which works
better on 98SE than the native version.

As dadiOH has said, it lives in C:\WINDOWS. The Me file has version
number 4.90.3000 as opposed to W98SE's 4.70.1998.

The newer Win2k files can be obtained from the MGDx web site.

I will caution though, there appears to be two (2) offerings of the
scanfrag.exe [the file that contains the new files]. One includes other
files which MAY cause problems in your system [contains winfile.exe, the
WRONG [old] version of dskmaint.dll, and a few other files]. The other seems
to also contain the older dskmaint.dll [unless it has been updated since I
downloaded it for testing]. You want at least the 4.90.3000 version for
dskmaint.dll. You also will want CVTAPLOG.EXE updated to 4.90.3000 if you're
using defrag to adjust your files per Windows load fast schemes [which are
debatable as useful].

some touted important updates official/unofficial:

OR:

Don't forget you also need to install one of the time zone updates, one
from MDGx, or Gary Terhune [MVP] has one available on his web site:
http://www.grystmill.com/ and you need to make sure you have updated as much
as you can via windowsupdare [though many useful files are NOT available via
that site.
