/3g switch

Please explain to me why I would ever want to use the /3gb switch since it
takes 1 gb of memory away from the operating system.

Helo,

The application must at least have the /3G flag in the header of it's
executable image to use it.
So not all application are able to use it

Hello,

I guess I should have stated that better. Why would you want to take away
memory from the kernel? Is it only to fill the application requirements?
This can't be good to use that often.

Yes, that's correct. Depending on what you've configured, the OS may not
need it. For instance a member server running SQL Server.
