Hello,
I use NTbackup to backup my files and system state on the server I have at
my home. I do a monthly normal backup to a file on an external hard disk
connected to the server via usb.
As any good server admin does I wanted to test that my backups were good so
if my server ever caught on fire and I lost everything I would be fine. I
downloaded Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and installed w2k3. Once installed I
brought the server up to the current patch level via windows update.
Next I connected the usb hard drive to the virtual server and tried to do a
restore. When I tried to open the backup file on the external hard disk I
recieved this error "the backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be
used".
My first thought was the backup file was corrupt. However, after reviewing
the logs it doesn't appear to be since the backup completed and the
verification was successful. Additionally, when I try to restore the backup
from the server in which it was made it works fine. The problem is only when
I try to restore to my newly built virtual server.
I'm at a total loss does anyone have any suggestions? Below is the log from
ntbackup.
