Hi,
I am sure this is simple but I am struggling being a newbie.

Got two computers in my home lab one 2003 server SP1, the other XP Pro.

2003 running AD, and DNS (steve.com). NOT using DHCP, all IP addresses
static and can ping each other. As such I have configured the DNS prefix of
the XP client to be steve.com. The hostname of the XP client is "PC" and the
hostanmes of teh server is "server01"

When I try to log the XP client onto the steve.com domain it gives an error
messaage:

Cannot log onto domain. Element not found.

WTF does that mean? It ask for a domain username and password that I
created on the server. Does that username need admin rights I wonder?

When I do a nslookup from the XP client of server1 i get a resolved address
10.10.10.5 = correct

I can resolve the clients own name too since i create an A recoird on the
DNS server.

Any help please? I am new to this and very eager to learn.

Thanks, Steve

Re: Newbie - problems logging XP client onto 2003 domain

Try re-joining them to the domain. Also make sure your user accounts
are OK. Also check the event log on the server :)

Take the PC off the domain, then rejoin it.

Re: Newbie - problems logging XP client onto 2003 domain

Oops - sorry for repeating what others said. If you have
a third-party firewall, e.g. ZoneAlarm, turn it off before
joining the domain.

Re: Newbie - problems logging XP client onto 2003 domain

Are you connected to the Internet? Is this you?

Registrant:
Perillo, Stephen

Steve.com is a registered Internet domain. You shouldn't be using it for a
test network. You will run into problems. You should recreate the lab and
use a non-registered domain name like steve.lan or steve.internal or
testnet.internal, etc. If that is your domain there are some special
considerations you need to take when using the same domain name for an
internal private network. It's not generally recommended to configure your
domain like this.

You don't mention if the client is configured to use the DC and only the DC
for DNS.

Re: Newbie - problems logging XP client onto 2003 domain

Hi,
Yes both compouters can reach the internet. However, I am just using
steve.com as an example of a domain. You saying these internet connecting
computers are trying to reach the "real" steve.com ? I'll try using a silly
domain name that does not exist on the internet

The Server is hosting the Active Directory and the DNS, its is also runnign
a DHCP server though I am just usign static IP's on teh XPclient and teh
server. I think I haven;t got the DNS set up right. When I installed teh DNS
I said it was a new forest. However, following the examples on
microsoft.com, I appear to have it all set up correctly.

Any docs anyone hs would be appreciated.

Hmmm.... I am doign this to learn towards a MCSA. I think I have a long
way to go ...... :-(

Re: Newbie - problems logging XP client onto 2003 domain

I shoudl also add that the client computer ony has a DNS server setting for
my test server. however, this client can still raxch the internet by going
through my router since that is teh default gateway configured..... ????
Infact, I am unsing this PC right now.

My router must be proxying somehow.....
