I have one workstation that has suddenly decided to take ages to open a file
that is the third or fourth folder in a file directory. It takes about 3
minutes to open and if you cancel it, it says program not responding but if
you do in via windows explorer it is instant.

Ran defrag, antivirus scan but could not find any issues.

Any ideas?

Depends on the antivirus scan, but try spywaredetector all in one word. It will
show you if anything is wrong - will not correct until you pay though and they
are greedy beggars - you only get 12 months and then presumeably have to pay
again - however it will give you a clue for Free.
