Sharing a printer.

[Rod]

Beware: learner driver.

I have W98se as main computer,
WinXP in son's room connected via wireless.

I cannot seem to get his XP to talk to my W98se
to enable printer via his XP.

Is this a known problem?
is there a workaround, or do I have to
purchase another printer for his XP.

This is one area that I am fuzzy on as far as sharing printers but it will
work if you buy another printer and printers are cheap. Painted Sky
Elementary was having all kinds of problems with printer sharing and that was
just with XP Professional computers. P.S.E. had stupidly phazed out all the
old Windows 98 S.E. machines despite my objections and guess what --- they
got sc___ed with during the summer when I was working as a camp counselor and
now they are paying for the consequences for their stupidity. Chris Quirke,
MVP is now seriously considering using Linux as a maintenance operating
system for Vista and I am supporting him as much as I can. Have a nice day

security, next cell phone security and the broad focus of information
security.

yes, they are cheap, I can pick them up for $5
as can monitors, I would have preferred sharing though
less cords, machines, printer cartridges etc and etc.

Perhaps.
Not much of an answer but depending upon your present network, the
capabilities of the printer; such as, if you have a network capable printer
[or driver capable of networking] OR an XP driver for the printer [which
depending upon both may be how yours end up] you may be able to.

1. Are your presently networked systems able to share files and folders
already?

2. Have you *shared* the printer?

If you supply the make and model of the printer, your present network
configuration [connections, any router or otherwise, cards, network
protocols used. etc.], the group may be able to help.

Not known, I only had the new XP booted last evening.
As soon as I set up "the kid's" XP cosmetically,
(it was just a jumble of boxes, wires and monitor on the desk)
I'll give it a kick in the ribs, and report.

Printer: Canon i250
XP has DWL-G510 wireless desktop adaptor.
G54 802.11g wireless connectivity
W98se has D-Link wireless G broadband router

Network protocols?

Does the XP have to have the Canon drivers installed?
I have not done that.

I thought in the first instance, perhaps XP wireless to W98se

The W98se D-Link wireless G and related G XP adaptor have had issues {been
discussed} too numerous to cross link from
microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web, however, first get everything fully
setup, As for the protocols and sharing (and networking generally):

Don't think that link is to *put you off* posting here, this group will

Are you able to retrieve files from the W98?
If "Yes"
In the W98 Settings->Control Panel->Printers->Right Click on the printer in
question->Click tab "Shared"->Radio Button "Shared as"-> It needs a name.
If "No"
Consult the help file in XP, it tells you what to do. MDSN has clear
references as well.
First make sure you can retrieve files from the W98 box.
Then do the Yes thing.
Should be a piece of cake, unless you have hardware defects somewhere.
If you have hardware problems there is a Bluetooth option for printers on
the market. That might be easier than sorting out the hardware problems.
Going from W98 to XP can be a sticky problem.

PS After you have defined your printer as shared in W98, you will have to
install it in XP. Do as you would with another printer installment. You
will be asked whether it is a network printer, which it is of course.

Aha,
therein lies the problem, maybe.
I have all my cab files on HDD,
and the box has been trained to look for needed files.
I havn't as yet, installed the printer on XP.

I'll be back in touch, on the morrow.

You don't need drivers etc on XP to run a printer on W98 from the XP box.
But the XP box must know about the printer else it cannot use it. Adrian.

Yes, that makes sense,
to a lad that was brought up on "Meccano",
this is still cutting edge stuff for the mind.
Even scary to know all these little waves floating about
when the two boxes talk.

Is the XP added to the workgroup?
Is "File and Print Sharing" enabled on both the XP and 98?
Is the printer configured as Shared?
Are the printer drivers installed on the XP?

You first need Start -> Control Panel - Network Setup Wizzard.
Then you need Start -> Control Panel - Add Printer.

The questions you have to answer are all evident information requirements
that are easily understood. These options were not made for wiz kids, just
for consumers, so don't be shy. Write down what you did, so you can asked
informing questions, if the results are not as desired.

Except that WinXP asked for printer specific Printer Drivers for
me after i had enabled Printer Sharing on my Win98SE machine and
tried to print to the Printer connected to the Win98SE machine
from my WinXP machine.

When Adrian says that the XP box must 'know about' the printer, he is
referring to what you are calling the "Printer Drivers". They aren't really
drivers in the technical sense - the 98 box is the one that actually drives
the printer - but in order to properly use the printer across the network
the XP box needs a series of files that provide information about the
printer and its capabilities and how to communicate with it.

That was why i tried to print without installing anything on the
WinXP machine initially (besides doing it out of curiosity). I
thought the WinXP machine got to 'know about' the printer by
enabling Printer Sharing on the Win98SE machine.

Oh, ok. My WinXP machine requested something printer specific,
but i can't say for sure exactly what from memory. I stopped the
print attempt, run the Software/Driver-installer bundle from the
printers support-CD, and when printing afterwards it put ink on
paper like if the printer was connected to an USB port on the
local computer instead of another one elsewhere on the LAN.
Can't say which of the hundreds or so files installed are used
when printing remotely vs. locally.
