My first post to this group, hope I'm in the right place and if not
please direct me to the appropriate newsgroup.
I've had this Toshiba Satellite A15S129 laptop for a few years now.
It runs on WinXP. I use it at wifi spots around town, cafes and
libraries and the like. It has antivirus and anti-spyware programs,
up to date.
Lately this laptop runs very slow. I really notice it in the Network
Connections function. Network Connections works okay right after the
computer boots, but if I have to use it more than once, it hangs.
It seems like the misbehavior started when I tried to update Webroot
Spy Sweeper, so I uninstalled it. The computer acts just the same
whether Spy Sweeper is installed or uninstalled. But anyway, right
after the SS update, the computer started its glitchy slow behavior
and also wouldn't recognize one of the wireless cards. I have two
pcmcia cards, an Orinoco b card and an Intellinet g card. At first it
wouldn't recognize the b card, then the b card started working again
whereupon the computer failed to recognize the g card. I fixed this
by uninstalling the g card driver and reinstalling it from the
original CD.
Next I thought I'd look into the possibility that my computer's
registry is messed up. I haven't done anything to the registry since
I bought the computer.
I used Max Registry Cleaner's free registry scan, which indicated the
registry would shrink about 3% if I used their utility to clean up the
registry. I wouldn't mind spending the money on a registry cleaner if
I knew it had a strong possibility of fixing the computer's
balkiness. Just thought I'd ask for the opinions of people that know
more than I do, how to go about getting my computer to work right
again.
