Hi Debb,
It sounds like you were using a feature of Windows XP called "Active
Desktop". This feature allowed you to display HTML controls on your desktop.
Active Desktop originated back in Windows 95 days, when thinking about
security was pretty elementary. Active Desktop presented many security
loopholes. It was impossible to make Active Desktop sufficiently secure to
meet Vista standards. So in Vista, the Active Desktop feature has been
discontinued.
However Vista also introduces the new "Sidebar" feature. You can do may of
the same things using Sidenbar, that you could do before using Active
Desktop.
There are numerous stock ticker gadgets available for Windows Sidebar, as
well as many other useful gadgets. See here:
