Morning all, have a question regarding a licensing.

We currently have a 2003 terminal server in our domain users are accessing
from another domain (managed my another supplier) my question is this, what
would the users require if they added a new machine into their domain with
regards to both server CAL's and TS CAL's.

Would they need 1 TS CAL and 1 Server CAL, or would they need 1 TS CAL and 2
Server CAL's.

Also, is the situation was changed slightly and the TS was in the same
domain as the users workstations, would then then still need 2 server CAL's
(one for the domain controller and one for the TS) plus the one TS CAL or
only 1 and 1.

thanks

Re: Licensing

I assume that the TS Licensing server is currently located in the
same domain as your Terminal Server?
Are both domains part of the same Active Directory forest, or are
they domains in different forests?
If the latter, is there a trust relationship between the forests?
This is needed if you want both Terminal Servers to use a single TS
Licensing Server, since Terminal Server Licensing Servers can only
issue TS CALs to Terminal Servers which are located in the same
domain or in trusted domains.

What are the OS licensing modes of all DC's and servers, both in
your domain and the other? Are they licensed in the "Per Server"
mode, or in the "Per Device or Per User" mode?

Re: Licensing

Yes, the TS licensing is in the same domain as the Terminal Server (let's
call this domain 2). The domains however are not in the same forest and there
is no trust relationship back to that domain, they are completly seperate.

Both the servers are in "per server" mode and there is only a TS in the one
domain (domain 2) but the machines that are connecting to the TS are in
Domain 1 connecting to the TS in Domain 2.

If TS Licensing was running on the server they were connecting too and the
server was in the domain the machines are connecting too, this was my
question if they would modify the amount of Server CAL's they would need, i
realize in either state they would need 1 TS CAL, but really the question
woudl be the ser CAL's

The domain the TS is in is 2003 server and the TS itself is also, the domain
(domain 1) the machines connecting to are in is 2000 in some cases and 2003
in others.

I appreciate you help,

thanks

Re: Licensing

Windows licensing requirements for 2 different versions of the OS
in 2 untrusted domains is way above my head.

I would recommend that you contact you local Microsoft
representative to get an assesment of your licensing requirements.
