Unable to Launch Group Policy Object Editor

Hi,
I am unable to launch gpedit.msc on a windows 2000 server that is part of a
domain. I get an error stating: "Failed to open the Group Policy Object on
this computer. You may not have appropriate rights. Details: Unspecified
Error"
I have tried this logged on with local admin rights as wellas the builtin
local admin with no luck. Any ideas anyone?

did you install any update ?

Does the other *.msc works ?

Could you trace activity with process monitor ?

Hi Mathieu,

No updates have been installed that I am aware of.
I can run other .msc files , such as service.msc and that works fine?

Is there anything else I can try? anyone?

Launch process monitor
launch gpedit.msc
save the process monitor trace
send it somewhere i could download it

Hi Mathieu,

I have run the process monitor and after browsing the output it pointed me
in the direction of the registry.pol file in c:\winnt\system32\group
policies\machine and enabling group policy logging inthe registry. The logs
indicated that a file was the "incorrect format".I renamed registry.pol to
..bak and was able to launch group policy eobject editor ok after that.
So it looked like the registry.pol file was corrupt (or maybe cpopied from
another machine, maybe a 2k3 box?).
