I don't know if this is the best group to ask for help, but I'm ready to
throw this thing off the porch!
I've been fooling with it just about all day.
I have some AVI's that will only play properly in WMP.
Al shop is another player I have and like but they won't play properly with
it. The voice and video are not in time.
Anyway, some play with WMP but others do not, I only get audio. The only way
I can get them to play is to install the codec called ffdshow.
I have tried the 2007 version, the 2004 version(whole system hangs with it)
and the 2006 version, that is said to be " the latest stable version of this
software"
with the 2007 and the 2004 version, the AVI's will play, but I keep getting
WMP illegal operations. It (the AVI's) is said to be using Divx4 codec, but
I installed that and just get lines. I am using WMP 7.01 and also tried WMP
9, but get the same error with ffdshow installed, and they wont play without
ffdshow installed.
Any Ideas?
Thanks, Tony

Re: wim 98 WMP Help

The windows multimedia group would be the right group to ask this in.

Ok Thanks Bill.

It is possible that the videos are using variable bit rate (VBR) audio.
This will work in most media players but can cause sound synchronisation
problems in some programs, especially video editors or converters.

DivX4 is an early version of DivX and I believe was quite buggy. Some AVI
files made with that codec may be inherently screwed up. (DivX5 was
probably the first really stable version.)

One thing you might try is loading the AVI file into the freeware
VirtualDub video editor (from virtualdub.org) and use the "scan video
stream for errors" command to check for file corruption. You could also
use this program to resave the file using "direct stream copy", this will
rewrite the video frames without recompressing them, and may fix any
problems with the file structure. However, if the audio is VBR (as
mentioned earlier) it would need recompressing to fixed bitrate. (If the
audio is VBR, VirtualDub will warn you when you open the file).

Ok thanks Marty
I dont know, IIRC these used to play OK with Al Show.
I may try un-reinstalling Alshow.
Don't see why WMP is having a problem working properly with the ffdshow
codec installed.
Might just be time to f disk this thing and start over.
Thanks, Tony
