When one person is in, say, a Word or Excel document that is in a
departmental folder that is shared by say 12-20 people in the department, and
another user tries to open the doc that is already in use, the second user
will receive the standard 'File in use, read only copy will only be
available' (or something to that effect). Is there some way for Windows
Server 2003 (or Active Directory?) to either notify the second user or for
that second user to find out who the first user is who has the file open and
exclusive write rights to that file? The problem is, for example with up to
20 peeps in a department the second user has to call up or check with up to
19 other peeps to find out who has the file open. TIA for any help on this
one ...

Hello,

what is your office's version ?
The second user should get the name of the first user, and should be able to
notify him from office

Either Office 2003 or Office 2007. How can they get the name of the first
user from Office?

Cool, we will check that. (It scares me to think that our end user would
have missed that though. haha)

Thanks again,

I think Office use the name set in the word's options. It may not display if
the property is empty

Re: Shared file in use/Read Only access question ...

Yeah, after further review the user does some to have a weird issue there -
if we open the file from User1's machine and then try to open it from other
machines in the office it does say 'File locked and in use by User1' (or
something to that effect) and gives like three options. But if we leave the
same file open by User1 and open it from this one particular machine it says
'File in use by"" ' and the name is blank. But as mentioned, several
machines that are running the same versions of Windows and Office do in fact
display the name from the exact same file. Weird ... Not sure if that could
be a firewall issue, or security issue, or perhaps some extra add-ins needed
for this one particular user's Office installation, or perhaps something else
(??).

Re: Shared file in use/Read Only access question ...

no, it's in the personnal settings of users, in the word options
You can hard code it to "Bill gates" if you want
