Network controller not recognized

I am trying something that is, well, not quite the normal activity for :pinstallation.

I have a laptop that I want to designate as a server. I have server 2008 x64 Enterprise and it installs fine. When I get to the Initial Tasks list, the controller says "not installed". I go to the networking and assign an IP address. Then I reboot. Still no Network Controller.

I further go to the Roles area and try to start installing DNS. However, the error message "No static IP address found" shows up. Hmmm. I have a static IP address on the Network Connection but... well, I am stumped.

The NIC is a Realtek rtl8168 and embedded onboard.

Can you tell me why I cannot see the controller in the list?

Yes, the controller is recognized in device manager. I even updated to current Realtek driver. Also, I can set the IP address in the Network Connections area.

So, why does the Windows 2008 not see it???

Or did I not do something correctly while the initial install was going on???

OK, I am new at this, so please bear with me.

I do not understand what you mean when you say "you didn't set up the network correctly when you installed." The network adapter should be OK since I installed the 64bit vista driver for it.

So, not sure still what to do and would like any and all help.

Remember this is on a laptop that I want to try to make my server.
