Backup Failing

I have a customer running Windows 2008 R2.
We are using the Windows 2008 backup utility.
We have using external usb hard drives to backup the server.

The very first backup i selected the option.
Backup to a hard drive that is dedicated for backups.
Well that didn't work when I swapped out the drive on Monday.

So I change the backup to backup to a volume.

The next 4 days worked fine, but Friday couldn't fine the volume.
So I have to modify the backup every Friday.

How can I get this to work everyday.
I've tried reformatting the Friday drive and still fails.
