Hello,

i make a server system comparison, usually i work with mac os X.

At the Mail point i got stuck because i found nothing about an integratet solution for some Mail Server ?

I know that MS use an extra Exchange server for that thing but is there a way for the Windows Server 2008 that he can send some Mails ?

And if yes what technologies are supportet ?
SMTP ?
POP and IMAP
SSL/TLS encryption ?
Mailing lists ?
WebMail ?
Junk mail filtering ?
Virus detection ?

Thanks for reply.

Kind regards.

For just Windows Server 2008 -- without Exchange -- you can set up the SMTP service to serve as a mail relay, but otherwise there is no built-in email functionality:
No pop/imap
No mailing lists
No webmail
No junk/virus filtering

You need to install Exchange or another email program to get those features.

Of course, you can USE webmail with SSL from a server, but a 2008 server can't BE a webmail or email server without other software.

The main advantage that drives investment in an MSC is the idea that it will be cheaper to operate over time than multiple local mailrooms , thus paying for itself and then saving the institution money over time.
