Server 2008 Client Requirements

I know this question must have been answered more then once but after researching for hours, I have yet to find an answer:

We are considering setting up a Server with Server 2008 and we need to know the requirements for the workstations:

Hardware shouldnt be an issue - the question is, what operating systems will work as a client/workstation on the network?

I would say that Windows 2000 would be the oldest you would want to use, and preferably Win XP. That said, I have seen kb articles for connecting WinNT and Win98 workstations, but those take more work getting them to connect. And, as usual, some group policies will only work with XP or newer, or Vista or newer, etc.

I wasn't clear enough on my original post. What I meant to ask is which Edition of the OS's are needed. As in, can you run Win 7 home or Win XP Home as a client on a Server 2008 network.

Home versions can't connect to networks. You'll need XP Pro or Windows 7 Pro or higher.

They can't connect remotely to a network. No VPN or RDP connections to servers are allowed and they can't join a domain.
