Server Is Booting And Shutting Down Very Slooooooooooooooooooooooow

Hi everyone,

first of all - Im German - so sorry for my bad english^^


Yesterday i installed my new Windows Server 2008 Standard (not R2)

My CPU is 2 x 2,8GhZ and my RAM is 4GB
The Architecture is x64


The Problem is:

I installed the Storage Server role and Exchange Server 2010 and now the server is going from super fast to super slow.
The funny thing is, that deinstalling the role is still making the system slower.
I have never had this before.
The System needs about 50min to boot and (please sit down first) 320min to shutdown!!!

I think, that this isnt normal...
Does anyone ever had the same problem?
I dont want to reinstall the server, because i installed exchange 2010 and configured it complete (took me about 5 hours...)



Any ideas why the server is so slow?

I'm so glad I was sitting before I read this!!

What kind of processor do you have?
2x2.8ghz ... intel? Amd?

In my experience, 4gb just isn't enough for Server2008.. but, with that being said,
Is it backing up before shutting down? Antivirus scan?
take a picture of the the most recent System & Application logs.. just the page, not individual ones.. let's see what's going on when it shuts down!

4GB isn't enough? I have Windows Server 2008 setup on a box with 512MB. Basic setup though.

You can experience some slow startup and shutdowns if the machine is unable to talk to a domain DNS server.

Are you loading in drives from a NAS or SAN? On occasion, I've seen machines be very slow starting and shutting down when they have a drive that is connected via iSCSI, but I don't know if those were caused by an iscsi issue or something else to do with the remote drive.
