Good morning,

I don't know if I chose the apropriate subforum, I chose this one because the first symptom of my problem derives from the process of installation Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard on Dell PowerEdge R710 rack server.

-- Symptoms: --
When I try to install Windows Server it all goes well to the point where computer must be rebooted for the very first time. It hangs, leaving message "wait until computer is reboted" or something similar (you know what I mean). I waited him, indeed, for couple of hours to no avail...

When I shutdown the computer holding the power switch and power on again, the process of installation finishes sucessfully, and the whole system seems to be stable. But when i try to restart or shutdown the computer it hangs. I noticed that it manages to stop services, and hangs with the message "Shutting down"... Once I leaved him to stay 24 hours with that messagge...

-- My course of action: --
Before I asked for help in this forum, these actions I have tried:
1) I changed RAID configuration (tried RAID 10, RAID 1)
2) I installed OS with no RAID configured (problem still exists); I changed different types of disks (different capacity) to exclude possibility of HD failure
3) Update all drivers
4) I have used Windows Update service and installed all the updates (software is licenced)
5) I ran Safe mode and Debbuging mode, but the problem persists... It hangs on shutdown or restart.
6) I run services.msc to see if there are non-microsoft services. All non-Microsoft services are disabled.
7) I reinstalled OS for more than 3 times
8) I googled for possible causes, edited Group Policy settings (e.g. option Clear Page File on Exit)
9) Installed various hotfixes...
10) Tried 3rd party software for computer shutdown (SlawDog Smart Shutdown)

Except this bug, I have no further issues with OS stability.

Now, I'm out of options. If you have any tips what do do next, I kindly ask you for your help.

I found a solution. There was a BIOS problem. Resetting the iDRAC to "factory defaults" solves the issue.

--> CTRL+E on POST and choose "Reset to factory defaults"
