What Is A Virtual Server?

Hi, im new to server hosting, and was curious how the "virtualization" process works, especially in reguards to sbs2008.
 
Virtualization allows you to have one main or more dedicated servers and break it down to make it look like many dedicated servers. Each virtual server or VPS is running it's own OS and looks to be a full server when in fact it isn't.
